William Morris was often inspired by his surroundings to further develop his designs, Cray was no exception. Inspired by a sample of a 17th century cut of fabric that Morris had viewed at the Victoria and Albert Museum he set off create a new design. And so, in 1884 Cray was born. Cray is a design enriched by natures influence. Within the design you can see motifs of foliage, leaves and flowers of various sizes. The vines inter lace bearing an abundance of flowers in various stages of bloom set with a strong diagonal direction.
William Morris is possibly known best for being heavily involved in the Arts and Crafts design movement in the 1860's which was very popular at the end of the 19th century in Britain, Australia, Canada and the USA. He was a poet, artist, designer, writer and an early advocate of socialism in Britain William Morris' designs are still very popular today and are produced widely as home textiles, gifts and wallpapers. We have reproduced many other William Morris designs in a range of home textiles.
